Flowing Hand School

The Flowing Hand School has its origins in the famous disputation between the Carmanians and the Logicians. When the Logicians showed that the magic of the Good God could be used to perform evil, the Carmanians underwent much soul-searching to find their error. The Hierophant and his Magi were quick to announce the Discovery of the Lie as the answer to all their woes but some others were not convinced.

One dissenter went so far as to write elegant theses "in a flowing hand" which he distributed around Brinnus. Nobody knows his name for to dissent from the Doctrine of the Lie was to be condemned as a Servant of the Lie. Mere possession of the Flowing Hand Theses was enough to send to people to the stake.

In the Thesis, the Scholar with a Flowing Hand denied that he had the Answer. What he did outline was a line of philosophical investigation by which the Answer could be found. Central to the Sage's Theses was the concept of the Great Error, a long-ago event that had sundered mankind from God. The conventional wisdom was that Mankind had been re-united with God through the agency of the Prophets. But as the Flowing Hand Sage pointed out that the authorities did not agree on what the Great Error was. If so, how could anybody really be certain that Mankind had been re-united with God?

The Answer, the Flowing Hand Sage argued, lay in the systematic study of all the magics of the World, whether good or evil, false or true, transcendent or immanent. Only then could the Great Error be identified with certainty and the necessary corrections made.

Although suppressed for a century or two, it enjoyed a covert popularity in Carmania even going so far as to enjoy a furtive college dedicated to the study of all the world's magic and which had made great discoveries. But these discoveries were all lost when the College was mysteriously destroyed and its practitioners all brutally slaughtered in the decades before the Dragonkill.

Despite the destruction of the college, the Flowing Hand Theses survived and enjoyed a renaissance in atmosphere of free inquiry within the Lunar Empire. The Lunars state confidently that the Answer is the Red Goddess but a few scholars are still trying to prove it.
